Nick BouwhuisFebruary 6, 20265 min read

Before buying an eSIM, you'll want to know if your phone supports it. The good news: most smartphones released after 2018 have eSIM built in. Below you'll find a complete overview by brand.

Quick check: does my phone support eSIM?

The fastest way to check if your phone supports eSIM:

On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About. If you see "Available SIM" or "eSIM", your phone supports it.

On Android: Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. If an EID number is displayed (alongside your IMEI), you have eSIM support.

Alternative: Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. If you see the option "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM", you're good to go.

FAQ

Can I use multiple eSIMs at the same time? Most modern phones support multiple eSIM profiles (often 5 or more stored), but you can typically only have 1 or 2 active simultaneously.

Does eSIM work on tablets and smartwatches? Yes, many iPads (WiFi + Cellular models), Samsung Galaxy Tabs, and smartwatches (Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch) support eSIM.

Does my phone need to be unlocked? Yes. A carrier lock prevents using other providers, including eSIM profiles. Most phones purchased in Europe are already unlocked.

I have a dual SIM phone (two physical slots). Is that the same as eSIM? No. Dual SIM means two physical SIM cards. eSIM is a digital, embedded SIM. Some phones have both a physical SIM slot and eSIM — giving you the best of both worlds.
